In the year 2013, Nigeria was reported to be home to 20million women and girls who have been mutilated or cut. Today, the number of mutilated women and girls keeps increasing. These women and girls experience long term consequences involving painful intercourse, decreased ability of sexual desire and pleasure, infertility, and increased risk of cervical cancer and health impacts such as severe pain, menstrual and urinary problems, excessive bleeding as well as mental and psychological agony attached with FGM. Despite the effort of various stakeholders towards advocating against FGM/C practices in the country, the practise still thrives in silence and our women and girls suffer this gender-based violence.

We can end this practice by collaborating and sharing our resources to increase awareness on FGM/C and laws that protect women and girls from FGM/C, and collectively push for its abandonment and effective policy enforcement.

Pledge to take action against FGM/C

I pledge to take action against FGM/C by lending my voice to the cause to ensure that all girls and women are safe from FGM/C practices and perpetrators of FGM/C are brought to law. I will actively engage individuals and groups around me in discussions and actions on FGM/C and laws that protect women and girls from FGM/C through various communication platforms. I promise to play my role to make the society healthy and safe for women and girls.
